Winter Sylvana’s mysterious e-mail
« on: April 11, 2018, 03:01:29 PM »

I just received below e-mail from sylvanastories[at]gmail[dot]com

*****

Dearest Friends,

I am coming out a long seclusion because I need your help. I was visiting with friends in Prague when I was encouraged (via gunpoint) to meet with a new client. As I value my life I decided to break my long-standing rule of no new clients and met with a young woman who I will refer to as Natasha, after one of my favorite characters in literature, because you would recognize her real name in an instant.

We sat in small café where we ordered chlebicek and discussed her situation.

“Don’t you think half a dozen armed guards is a little bit of overkill?” I asked.

“Not if you knew who was after me.”

It turned out that what she wanted was protection, since she knew I was in contact with a number of high-profile underworld operators, and a card reading. Since I didn’t have any cards with me she dispatched a member of her entourage to fetch a deck from a local bookstore. I did a simple spread and she was quite agitated with my reading.

“That settles it; I’m moving to my next location. I have a contact there who will get in touch with you.”

“Where will you be going?”

“I can’t say, but I will give you hint. It is a city on the banks of an ancient river which was essential to a core civilization.”

“Well, that narrows it down,” I said sarcastically.

“Like I said, someone will be in touch.”

I told her that I would do my best to raise a few contacts around the globe who might be able to assist her and she said, “We're going to need an army.”

“Who is after you? And why?”

She sighed. “That is something you will have to figure out for yourself. Let me just say that the man who is after me is very powerful, and right now he is determined to wreak havoc on a global scale the likes of which nobody has ever seen.”

I felt a shiver go up my spine. “How?”

“He is a brilliant financial and political prodigy, although he is actually famous for something quite different. He works out in the open as a successful person in his field, but behind the scenes he toys with and manipulates markets, crashing some while sending others skyrocketing, and he bribes politicians, pundits, and writers to create mass chaos.”

“I think I know who you might be talking about. . .”

She cut me off abruptly, “You don’t.”

I nodded thoughtfully. “Okay, well how shall we refer to him?”

“I call him the man without a face.”

“Without a face?”

“I don’t mean that literally, of course. You’ll have to look beneath the surface.” With that she refused to say another word. She gathered up her things and was escorted to a large black SUV by her thugs. I sat for a few minutes in bewildered silence and finished my chlebicek before ordering coffee. Then I took out my notebook and made a list of every person I knew who would be able to help me.

I am contacting you, dear ones, because I have either worked with you before or because a close friend has recommended you as someone who can be trusted. As a marker of your mission I will eventually ask you to carry a special artifact with you at all times, but we will get that later, after you have passed several tests letting me know the depth of your commitment. I can’t say you won’t be in danger, so there will be no hard feelings if you feel you can’t join the cause at this time.

For now, if you are interested in going further, please send an email to me with the name of a card from the minor arcana and I will give you a reading. If you do not wish to receive my emails, please respond with the word REMOVE in the subject line and I will trouble you no further.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Always,

Winter Sylvana

Woke up to a new e-mail:

*******

After leaving the coffee shop I made my way to the bookstore where Natasha had sent one of her bodyguards to buy a pack of tarot cards. It occurred to me that he left and returned so quickly that she must have known about the place beforehand. I was curious enough to do some poking around.

It was a small bookstore, not one of the big chains, and I noticed right away a large picture book on the front table filled with photographs. It was called, "Ancient Cities, Ancient Rivers." I picked it up and began perusing it when I heard someone clear their throat behind me.

"What can I do for you?" I whirled around and came face to face with a woman who at first glance seemed quite old. She had pure white hair and deeply lined skin, and she was small and slight and a little hunched over. But as I looked at her more closely I saw the muscle tone under her skin and the way she moved with confidence and strength, and also the glow in her eyes. She was either much younger or much older than she appeared.

"Someone was in here just a short time ago, to purchase a tarot deck?" I held up the deck.

"I'm sorry, I don't give refunds."

I shook my head. "No need for a refund. I was just wondering if you noticed anything strange about the transaction."

"Strange? No, not really. Well, there might have been one thing."

"What? Anything at all."

"Well, this probably doesn't mean a thing, but the man who bought the tarot deck was here yesterday as well, along with a young woman who looked oddly familiar. But I didn't say anything to her because there is no way someone like that would be here. I must have been mistaken about her so I kept my thoughts to myself."

"Mistaken as to her identity."

"Yes, she looked like someone famous."

I nodded. "Did anything else unusual happen?"

"No, she just looked through the books on the front table there and asked the man she was with, the one who came back for the tarot deck, where they should go next."

"And what did he say?"

"He just told her they should go wherever fortune takes them."

"And what did the woman say?"

"She looked confused at first but then she smiled and nodded and said that of course they would go where fortune takes them. Why hadn't she thought of that sooner?"

I smiled said, "Thank you, that was actually very helpful."

* * *

Shortly after that I went back to my hotel on foot and grabbed my bag. I always travel very lightly with just a single backpack. I grabbed it and headed to the embassy, where a friend of mine works. He game me some documents and currency and by the end of the day I was on an airplane. I'll let you know when I'm settled at my new destination.

Your first task after you choose a card from the minor arcana and receive your reading is to choose a card from the major arcana which will serve a role in this mission. You may NOT choose the Fool card, but all other cards are open. However, it will be first come, first serve, so please choose three major arcana cards and list them in order of preference.  I will try to give you your first choice unless it is already taken.

Choose carefully. You will work with this card for quite a while.

Thank you and all my best,
Winter

Hi. I'm Strength. Hopefully the flexible sort like rope, a rubber band or a boa constrictor...um, better stop there. Cyas.

Hello,

I am late to the party and I have just sent in my minor card and am awaiting a reply.  I have been keeping up with the posted readings though.

Looking forward to more!

Anyone starting to poke around in the dark yet? Trying to find a connection or reference between 'a man without a face' and 'an old riverbank'? My first association would be Egypt and pharaos (no face?), so maybe Cairo?? Or am I getting ahead of myself already?  :P

New email and website with our first task....

https://www.sylvanastories.com

The image on the site is of Hipparchus:

Hipparchus (c.190-c.120 BC), Ancient Greek astronomer, at the Alexandria Observatory, Egypt. At left is the armillary sphere he invented. Hipparchus is considered one of the greatest astronomers of antiquity. He calculated the length of the year and discovered the precession of the equinoxes. It is thought that the later work of Ptolemy was based on the work done by Hipparchus.

In response to my answer on the first test I have now been added to the list of major arcana  :D

"Begin," he said, "by telling me your dreams."

I closed my eyes and begin telling him the story of a priest who had been coming to me in my dreams and giving me pieces of a map to another world

Hi all. Re that excerpt above from Winter's email: The Curious Case of the Cleric Cartographer.  Google says there were a handful of merit. It was interesting to learn that Hipparchus was also a cartographer of note "who attempted to update the world map by gathering new information and implementing them in his maps... However, very few of Hipparchus’ cartographic works exist today." SOURCE: https://geokult.wordpress.com/2011/07/24/the-history-of-mapping-hipparchus/

So, anyone seeing any leads or have ideas about where Winter has landed from her email? Am clueless 'tho I'm ruling out Holland.  ;)
Also, if anyone ever needs to see the full contents of an email just give a shout & someone will post it here. Bye4Now.
